A man who thought there was an intruder in his house shot and killed his fiancee the day before they were to be married, police said Friday.

Good thing he bought a gun to protect his loved ones.

“Right now everything points to a tragic accident,” Police Chief Kevin Brunelle told The Associated Press, adding investigators were awaiting forensic results.

John Tabutt, 62, told investigators he got his gun when he thought he heard an intruder, then fired at a figure in the hallway, according to Brunelle. It was Tabutt’s live-in fiancee, 62-year-old Nancy Dinsmore, who family members say he was going to marry Saturday. Tabutt told authorities he thought she was next to him in bed the whole time.

A message left for a phone number listed for the house was not returned.

Brunelle said no charges have been filed against Tabutt, adding the information he provided has been verified and he appeared “very distraught.”

Tabutt was “very concerned about her well-being,” standing by while she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Brunelle added.

The couple planned to wed in a small ceremony Saturday at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winter Springs, Dinsmore’s son-in-law Scott Sposato, of Vero Beach, told the Orlando Sentinel.

“They loved each other,” he said. “It was quite apparent.”

Tabutt called 911 shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday, moaning and sobbing, the newspaper reported.

“I thought I had an intruder in the house,” he told the emergency dispatcher. “Honest to God, she looks dead.”

He then thought he heard her take a breath.

“Hang in there, Honey. Hang in there,” he said.

A 21-year-old mentally challenged woman was led away from the bus stop at downtown Cincinnati’s Government Square complex Saturday afternoon by an unknown man and taken to a nearby stairwell where he attempted to have sex with the woman, police in Cincinnati said.

For reasons that are not clear to police, the man raced off with the woman’s cell phone and wallet after forcing her pants off and initiating sex.

The woman, who lives in a group home, told police that she was approached by four people at the bus stop who began talking to her.

One man then led her by the hand across the street and through the Westin hotel and then over to a Carew Tower stairwell.

Police don’t think the other men followed.

The attacker is described as black man, in his 20s. He has braids and was wearing black pants, a white shirt and a brown jacket.

Nine cats were killed in a Volusia County house fire, which was caused by a colony of ants Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

Tabby swears revenge for fallen brothers, will destroy all ants when free.

Rhonda Spivey, the homeowner, said she had about 80 cats in her home on Vine Street in Daytona Beach.

Daytona Beach fire said it recovered 36 cats from the home, nine of which were dead.

Spivey said she and her husband live in the home with the animals. She said people gave them cats and promised to come back to get them but never did.

Lt. Fred Godawa of the fire department said a colony of ants formed a nest around an electrical outlet on the living room wall, which sparked the fire. The investigator said it was first time he had seen a fire caused in this manner, according to Godawa.

An Iowa father has been charged with child endangerment after police said he chained his son to a car bumper on Sunday.

Should have chained his leg.

The father, Richard Collins, 37, told authorities that he was trying to protect the teen. The incident happened in Davenport.

Collins said first confined his son who has one arm to his room, but when he started wrecking things and broke a window, Collins chained him to part of the car.

Collins was charged with child endangerment with bodily injury after police said chaining his son to the detached bumper from a 1979 Camaro. Collins said he came up with the idea after the 14-year-old ran away and was returned by police.

Collins and his brother James admit to wrapping a rusty chain around the teen’s ankle and chaining him to the bumper to prevent him from running away again.

“You know the old ball and chain routine that they done in the old days, well that’s what this was. Yeah, it may have been a little outrageous and out of control, but I was trying to protect him from people I don’t want him hanging around with,” said Collins.

A Palestine man was behind bars Sunday night after police say he lead DPS troopers in Leon County on a wild chase while he was stark naked.

According to DPS, the chase started in on Highway 79 Leon County just north of Franklin where 31-year-old Ulbado Olvera was driving a stolen car.

The chase continued through Robertson County and finally into Brazos County where Olvera allegedly drove into a ditch near the University Drive exit on Highway 6.

DPS says Olvera, who was naked the entire time, got out of the car and ran onto the highway where he was eventually arrested.

A Kirkland woman faces drug charges following a no-knock search warrant at her residence, authorities said.

At about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said they raided the Pratt Avenue home of Tammi Livermore, 32, and found cocaine, heroin, scales, drug paraphernalia and cash.

She was charged with felony and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic instrument and criminal use of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Two thugs who attacked what they thought were a pair of transvestites picked on the wrong men – when their intended victims turned out to be cage fighters on a night out in fancy dress.

Dean Gardener, 19, and Jason Fender, 22, singled out the two men walking along a street in wigs, short skirts and high heels.

Bare-chested Gardener was caught on CCTV confronting one of the men in a pink wig, black skirt and boob tube – then seen swinging a punch, a court heard.

But the other cage fighter, wearing a sparkling black dress and matching long wig, sprang to his friend’s help, delivering two lightning-quick punches to the two stunned yobs.

The cage fighters were then seen teetering away in their high heels, stopping only to pick up a clutch bag they dropped during the melee.

Gardener and Fender were left dazed and seen staggering to their feet after their failed attack.

Arrested for bad choice in movies?

According to a charge filed in September 1998, Elisabeth M. Weiss of Iowa City rented three videotapes — “U-Turn,” “Devil’s Advocate” and “Bio Hunter” — on May 23, 1998. The woman rented the tapes from the now defunct Hagen’s Video, police said. According to police, the videotapes were due the next day, but Weiss never returned them.

As of Sept. 3, 1998, the videotapes were not returned and an Iowa City Police detective contacted Weiss and asked her to return them. Weiss told the detective she would take back the videotapes but never did so.

According to the criminal complaint, the total value of the movies and late fees is $231.97.

Iowa City Police Sgt. Troy Kelsay was unaware of what led to Weiss’s arrest on the 11-year-old warrant. Kelsay said Weiss was picked up by authorities outside the area.

Weiss was charged with fourth-degree theft. She was taken to the Johnson County Jail, posted a cash bond and was released an hour later.

After 41-year-old Longo Jr. repeatedly stabbed his wife shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, he then stabbed himself about 20 times and slashed at his throat, police said. Once Kristin Longo died, Longo Jr. was alive long enough to be discovered by their 8-year-old son and to admit to the stabbings.

Although Kristin Longo, 39, did fear for her safety as her husband’s emotional stability spiraled downward in the weeks leading up to the murder-suicide, she appeared to believe everything would be OK after Monday’s appearance in state Supreme Court, Massoud said.

Sarasota, Florida – Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies say 47-year-old Gary Mitchell planted several bushes along the front sidewalk of the home he’s renting, located at 5293 Old Ashwood Drive, in Sarasota. The bushes run along the sidewalk and along portions of the county right of way, just east of his property line, according to the sheriff’s office.

Monday, one of his neighbors, Teal Fowler, noticed that there were several razor blades sticking to the branches of his bushes. Fowler took pictures and talked to Mitchell about it. She called the sheriff’s office she says because she was afraid someone would get cut. “There’s children. There’s pets. There’s quite a few people who access the sidewalk.”
