Chicago Police issued an alert about a potent drug that is peddled on the streets as heroin, but actually is hundreds of times stronger and may have caused up to a dozen fatal overdoses in recent weeks on the South Side.
The Sun-Times reported Sunday that investigators became concerned about a pattern of fatal overdoses where the victims were either found on a stretch between 27th and 30th, on State and Dearborn, or had bought drugs there. On Monday, Chicago Police officials alerted the public, saying they believe a synthetic drug called fentanyl has been sold as heroin.
Fentanyl, a prescription pain-killer that is 80 times more powerful than morphine and is used by cancer patients, has surfaced before as a substitute for heroin and has proven lethal here and elsewhere the country.

AMIENS, France — The Frenchwoman who received the world’s first partial face transplant showed off her new features to the public today, saying in a heavily slurred voice that she now looks “like everyone else” and hopes to resume a normal life.
Isabelle Dinoire’s speech was difficult to understand, but she explained how she was disfigured by a dog bite last year, and she thanked the family of the donor who gave her new lips, a chin and nose.
A fine, circular scar was still visible where the face tissue was attached in the 15-hour operation in Amiens on Nov. 27.

NORFORK, Ark. – The suspect in a hatchet-and-gun attack in a Massachusetts gay bar was in custody following a shootout that left an Arkansas police officer and a woman dead on Saturday, police said.
A police officer from the northern Arkansas town of Gassville was shot as he attempted to apprehend Jacob D. Robida, according to state police spokesman Bill Sadler.

ANSLEY – The woodsman who allegedly covered himself in “war paint” before assaulting two men with a machete this week is a decent, well-educated man, according to locals.
Wayne Stephen Parks, 57, has been living in the wilderness here for the past five years, in a makeshift tent near the CSX tracks, the site where he allegedly “hacked” two men with a machete Tuesday night following an argument at his forest quarters.
The story in this small community is a bit different: Hunters say Parks was defending himself and his land.
“He was a good man to me,” said Roy Necaise, 37. “We’d go back there and visit him all the time; he’s never hurt nobody.”

Bradenton, Florida — Deputies say a 16-year-old has been arrested for beating his grandmother with a two-by-four for refusing to give him $100 for beer. Charged is Kurt Cass of Hammock Drive, Bradenton.

ors say Cass went into his 60-year-old grandmother’s bedroom Thursday and asked her for $100 for beer. When she refused, he allegedly placed a razor blade on her throat and demanded she take him to the bank to get the money, deputies said.
“When the victim arrived back home she locked all of the doors,” deputies reported. “The defendant arrived back home and kicked the front door in.
