The great Indian witch hunt

December 22nd, 2008 admin No comments

Everyone knows that trial by drowning or fire is the only real way to be sure..witch_hunt

Indian police began a probe on Monday into reports that villagers in a tribal area of central India beat 50 women with sticks after accusing them of witchcraft, and cut off their hair.

The villagers acted on the advice of a local spiritual man who said the assault would protect them from evil spirits, in a forest in a poor district of Chhattisgarh state, 400km (250 miles) from the capital Raipur, police said.

Dozens of women are killed every year on suspicion of being witches or witch doctors in India, where superstition is widespread, especially in rural areas that lack an effective schooling system.

While there are few killings in Chhattisgarh, more than 100 women are tortured, paraded naked or harassed in the state every year, officials say.

December 21st, 2008 admin No comments

How many times have we heard this story? Pitt bull > owner!

Two dogs mauled their 60-year-old owner to death Friday afternoon when he stepped into the backyard of his Rubidoux home to smoke, officials said.

Nationwide, all breeds of pit bulls were responsible for 110 human deaths from 1982 to 2006, according to statistics compiled by Animal People magazine from media reports.

Gerald Adelmund was declared dead at the cream-colored house in the 5700 block of Kenwood Place after deputies pulled him inside, said Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez. The dogs were described as a 4-year-old, 107-pound male, part pit bull and part mastiff, and a 52-pound female pit bull, about 6.

Outside Adelmund’s front door lay a mat reading “Wipe Your Paws.”

I left my heart at the car wash

December 20th, 2008 admin No comments

Its hunting season, chances are… it is not human.

Pathologists can’t tell whether a heart found this week at a Paw Paw car wash is that of a human or animal and plan to submit the organ for DNA testing to make a final determination, the village’s police chief said Friday.

“They’ve looked at it but they’ve said the same things the doctors here have said,” Chief Patrick W. Alspaugh said. “They can’t make any conclusions.”

Alspaugh said police took the heart to a local veterinarian, who was unable to determine if it was from an animal or a human. A Paw Paw cardiologist told police the heart was consistent in size to a human heart, but also was unable to reach a definitive conclusion, the chief said.

Calico cats always keeping the black mouse down.

Mice may be miceresponsible for a blaze that killed nearly 100 cats at an animal shelter near the Canadian city of Toronto, officials say.

The fire at the humane society shelter in Oshawa also killed three dogs and some rats that were up for adoption.

An initial report from the fire marshal says mice or rats chewing through electrical wires in the ceiling are likely to have sparked the blaze.

Offers of help have been pouring in from animal lovers across Canada.

“Unfortunately, the mice probably perished in the fire as well,” he added.
